The centerpiece of the exchange is FestivalandCo, the renowned Anglophone and bilingual literary festival sponsored by Paris' beloved Shakespeare & Company bookstore. Now in its fourth year, FestivalandCo brings together 30 of the world's most celebrated writers, storytellers, poets and filmmakers for a three day festival in various venues around Paris. San Francisco invitees include Poet Laureate emeritus Jack Hirschman, Porchlight storytelling series creators Beth Lisick and Arline Klatte, authors Dave Eggers, Robert Mailer Anderson, Yi-Yun Li, Alfonso Montuori and a special after-party cameo jazz set by Kitty Margolis at Le Club du Cercle.

A new approach to creativity can make a life-altering difference in our understanding of the world and ourselves, and help foster new ways of being in the world. This workshop draws on spirituality, science, music and the arts, and everyday life to show that creativity is the very nature of existence. As we explore some of creativity’s many manifestations, we will challenge popular myths about creativity and see how creativity can be found all around and within us—from the cosmos to the kitchen table to our very nature as human beings.

The delightful and mysterious phenomenon of musical improvisation will serve as an entry point into the complexity of creativity. The jazz lens allows us to see the interconnections of rigor and imagination, tradition and innovation, as we celebrate the virtues of improvisatory "serious play." Kitty Margolis will provide a live jazz soundtrack and both leaders will share their insights into the nature of jazz and improvisational performance.

Participants will have the opportunity to broaden their understanding of creativity, break through limiting assumptions, and explore their own creative process in a variety of contexts through singing, writing, storytelling, and other forms of expression and creative inquiry.
